Yes, But.

Daily writing prompt
Do you see yourself as a leader?

Everyone should consider themself a leader in some capacity. We have such a narrow idea of “Leader” in this capitalistic hellscape, but everyone has something to offer, some way to serve. My kids are leaders at times, sometimes I am, sometimes my husband is. It should be like that; we all have something deeply needed to offer one another if only we’re humble enough to accept the directions of the person giving them. Everyone everyone everyone is a leader, even if only for a split second, a minute, or a week.

a little child will lead them.

Isaiah 11:6
Swanson's Peaceable Kingdom, a vibrantly colored vision of animals and people living together in mutual cooperation and care
The Peaceable Kingdom, John August Swanson 1994

Christian leadership is about infinite outpouring, not domination or control. The stronger animals are paired with the weaker animals in Isaiah 11:6 to show us that reversal of the social order is the point. I hope to be an embodied leader; someone who knows her own power and role in a situation, and who uses it to empower others. As a White, cis, Christian woman in the Imperialistic States of America, there’s a lot that’s been privileged to me, and a lot that I hope to throw away in order to live peaceably with others. In no particular order:

  • Heteronormativity
  • Patriarchy
  • White Supremacy
  • Christian Nationalism
  • Military Industrial Complex
  • Economic Privilege
  • Empire-based worldview and culture
  • Capitalism
  • Domination systems
  • Prison-Industrial Complex

So own your little bit of leadership. And interrogate the cultural conditioning that makes you think you’re not a leader. You matter.
