I’d sure have a lot less laundry to fold.* 😩
In all seriousness, we have too much stuff. Over 10 years living together and two kids in, we have accumulated and it’s too much. Oh, and two cats. But they don’t like ANYTHING we get for them, so they’re currently asleep on the human couch, which we upgraded to a bigger sectional. The tricky thing is we buy almost everything used whenever possible, so the financials are almost a trick because we can afford a huge sectional for less than 200$! And a free piano from this church giving it away! And cheap baby toys being passed down in the local moms group!
I am all for anti-capitalism, but I am very much in process. I say that because while I’ll look to pass things on sometimes, or source used, I still emotionally shop. As in, sometimes I feel the existential itch or ennui or frustrations and my reaction will be to shop. “Mental health” shopping. I got a new set of watercolors I didn’t technically need that way recently. The jolt of dopamine was increased because they were on clearance. How could you pass that up???
Ultimately, there are things that matter to me, like the hat I designed an knit while staying with my grandpa. It reminds me of him. The handmade clothes my babies wore when they were teeny tiny. Leftover invitations and programs from our wedding. I have some family memorabilia that is important to me, acquired from around the world on amazing travels or at important moments. There are some things I would be devastated to lose. It’s interesting to me though how much of my life and memory has been digitized in the form of videos, emails, and pictures, so ultimately I could easily see myself starting over. But until our mentality and approach is shored up, we’d just end up with Too Much. Marie Kondo may be on to something, but even she gave up when she had kids. Lastly, this blog would be a lot quieter, since this hypothetical scenario would hypothetically include my computer!

*This is not a humble brag I literally am sitting next to a Mt. Laundry of insane proportions. THE CAT HAS MOVED IN. I’m not sure if that’s a sign it’s serving us or our animals have given up on us.
