If you’re not at the table…

Daily writing prompt
Do you vote in political elections?

…You’re probably on the menu.

Yes, I vote. However in this current system, my voice has little to no impact. My congressional representative as well as my state representative districts have been gerrymandered to the point where I am not represented. SCOTUS has just destroyed the last bit of the landmark Voting Rights Act. These things are recent, however we have seen several times now since 2000 how the electoral college is a relic of the past and is consistently handing down presidents that we don’t want.

As a Christian, I believe that ultimately it’s my responsibility to vote for Common Good policies and agendas. The common good looks like food on the table for everyone. And homes with tables. Communities that have access to healthy food. Schools with full funding and the autonomy to respond to the local cultures, needs, and kids. Children who grow up with adults who care, are resourced, and able to break generational trauma and curses. Out with private equity inflating the prices of homes and rent. Out with billionaires. I could go on, but perhaps you get the idea. Christians shouldn’t wring their hands over poor people showing up at a food pantry or needing help with heat or diapers or formula when they vote for politicians and policies that systemically decimate already marginalized groups of people. We give no parental leave, then chastise women who cannot breastfeed. There is truly no end to the hypocrisies. It’s as much a moral failing to vote against the common good as it is to refuse to vote.
